Grgich’s Yountville vineyard forms the heart of the winery’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with grapes from the estate’s Rutherford and Calistoga vineyards rounding out the blend. All three vineyards are farmed without artificial pesticides or herbicides, and are Certified Organic. The result is a full-bodied, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with pure flavours and a pronounced sense of place.
Grgich Hills believes in minimal-intervention winemaking, using techniques that allow the wine to develop nuanced flavour and deep colour. Each lot is aged separately for several months, then blended to create a wine that is more complex than the individual parts. After blending, the wine spends another 18 months in barrel to fully harmonize before bottling. Finally, this wine has been cellared by the producers, allowing for additional complexity and softness in the tannins. It’s ready to enjoy now and remains an excellent value.
The nose is complex, with layers of black fruit, leather, and violets that carry through to the palate and linger on the finish. Herbal and elegant with a rich mouthfeel, this is a Cabernet that would love a rack of lamb or roast duck as much as a good grilled steak.
“As usual and as expected, Grgich Hills’ current release Cabernet Sauvignon is outstanding. I guess the question really is whether this producer can ever do anything wrong. Year after year, the team at Grgich Hills produces stunning, balanced wines from a slew of different varieties of grapes, even Zinfandel. The breadth of their talent is amazing. This Cabernet, for example, is quintessential Grgich Hills’ style — bursting with flavour, yet elegant and not flamboyant. And long — the flavours remain long after the wine has left your mouth. And then the next sip, new flavours, black fruit, a touch of olive or other savoury notes, emerge. All of this is wrapped in suave tannins. In a line-up of top California Cabernets, some at twice the price, it was a stand out. All I can say is wow!”

“The 2014 Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon opens to seductive aromatics of blackberries and dark cherries woven together with sweet spices, toast, spring florals and a touch of anise, which all soar from the glass. Medium to full-bodied with a lovely round, polished texture along with excellent depth and balance. Dark fruits and sweet spices remain persistent as the expand through the velvety finish. (Best 2017-2029)”

“Most of this wine comes from Yountville, with contributions from Rutherford and Calistoga as well. The freshness of Yountville is there in the front of the wine, fragrant, herbal and refined. Then there’s full ripeness that brings depth to the flavours and juicy tannins to the finish. Distinctly meaty, with an iron-like warmth, this should gain complexity with several years of bottle age.”
