Grgich’s Yountville vineyard forms the heart of the winery’s Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with grapes from the estate’s Rutherford and Calistoga vineyards rounding out the blend. All three vineyards are farmed without artificial pesticides or herbicides, and are Certified Organic. The result is a full-bodied, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with pure flavours and a pronounced sense of place.
Grgich Hills believes in minimal-intervention winemaking, using techniques that allow the wine to develop nuanced flavour and deep colour. Each lot is aged separately for several months, then blended to create a wine that is more complex than the individual parts. After blending, the wine spends another 18 months in barrel to fully harmonize before bottling. Finally, this wine has been cellared by the producers, allowing for additional complexity and softness in the tannins.
The nose is complex, with layers of black fruit, leather, and violets that carry through to the palate and linger on the finish. Herbal and elegant with a rich mouthfeel, this is a Cabernet that would love a rack of lamb or roast duck as much as a good grilled steak. Ready to enjoy now and remains an excellent value.
“This Cabernet is blended with 6% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Fresh tones of brioche and currant meld with crushed rock, pencil and sweet tobacco. Youthful tannins offer a structured frame to this undeniably elegant wine.” 92 points, Wine Enthusiast, June 2019
“This shows some of the classic Grgich hallmarks with fresher fruit that runs in the red to black plum spectrum as well as fresh herbs and grass. Medium to full body, grainy tannins and a minerally, dynamic finish. From biodynamically-grown grapes.” 91 points, James Suckling, December 2017
