It might sound strange, but until the end of the 1970’s, a grape as common around the world as Chardonnay was, in Friuli, confused with Pinot Bianco. Although the varietal has great potential, it had not yet found a place in producers’ hearts. It is possible to find wines that prove that the great Chardonnays of Friuli can compete with great Chardonnays from other areas of the world: Jurosa is one of them. This is Chardonnay from the calcareous gravel-rich soil of the Jurosa-Gris vineyard on the right bank of the Isonzo River, fermented and matured on fine lees in French oak. The wine remains in barrel for nearly a year to mature, followed by an additional 12 months in the cellar after bottling.
Pair with roast chicken or rabbit braised with thyme.
“This is a very classy Chardonnay from Northeast Italy – so delicately built but full of flavour. There is expected toasted lees and spice from the barrel work but it is the bright yellow plum, apple and florals that I really admire here. And there is something exotic like macaroon as well. It is medium-full bodied, creamy yet fresh, with superb focus and length. Some tail end bitterness.”

“Lis Neris’s top Chardonnay bottling, this is indeed an “important” Chardonnay with deftly integrated wood, but mostly generous, ripe orchard fruit, white and yellow fleshed, and generous heat from alcohol (14% declared). It’s not a light, cool climate example by any means, but rather one born of heat and sun, yielding a broad and ample wine. I’d suggest drinking this over the shorter term – I don’t feel there’s much to gain. It’s all about the billowing fruit and intense concentration already on offer.”
