The Salanques vineyards are situated 450 metres above sea level on steep hillsides composed of Priorat’s unique black liquorice slate soil. The wine is a blend of 65% Garnacha, 25% old Carignane, and 10% Syrah. The Garnacha and Carignane vines are between 70 and 90 years old, the Syrah are younger. This is a balanced, concentrated, remarkable elegant wine that speaks to the skill and focus of the Mas Doix team.
Fruit is harvested by hand and then transported to the winery in small crates. After sorting, the fruit is de-stemmed and fermented as individual berries in small lots. The wine aged for 14 months in fine-grained French oak barrels before it was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
“The red 2020 Salanques was produced with 65% Garnacha, 25% Cariñena and 10% Syrah. It showed generous oak (it spent 12 to 14 months in barrel) and plenty of tannins on the palate, and despite having less alcohol than the 2019 I tasted next to it, it felt riper. 2020 was a challenging year of rain, heat and fungus. It’s ripe at 14.5% alcohol. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.”
