The largest of all the 1er Crus of Meursault, “Charmes” is also the archetype of the style of Meursault – elegant, rich and powerful. The name “Charmes” may come from the word “chaume”, which means stubble field — ancient communal fields that were once cultivated then allowed to go fallow. It may also refer to woods of hornbeam (“charme”) trees. A nose of grilled hazelnut, fresh butter, a rich and intense palate.
The soil in Les Charmes is quite deep and is composed of alternating layers of clay and limestone covered with a considerable amount of calcareous gravel, playing an important role in the richness of the wine. The grapes are manually harvested, then carefully pressed. The wine is aged 17 months in oak (25% new oak), blended and bottled after gentle fining and filtration.
Concentrated and elegant on the nose, with aromas of almond, fresh butter, warm bread, hot croissant, fine spice and dried fruit. The body is round, without being heavy, and the acidity is perfectly balanced. Try pairing this Meursault with butter scallops, fish, a creamy pasta dish or mild cheese.
