Les Folatières is the largest 1er Cru vineyard in the village of Puligny-Montrachet. The name Folatières is from the old French word “follots”, which means ‘located in a humid place, often foggy’. Olivier Leflaive’s vines are located in the upper part of les Folatières, known as les Peux Bois. It is a former Domaine Leflaive property.
The vineyard covers 17 hectares just north of the famous Grand Cru vineyards Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet, facing east. The terroir is similar to the surrounding vineyards, with rocky, marly limestone soils that are rather susceptible to erosion (steep slope).
The grapes are High Environmental Value (HVE). After being harvested manually, the grapes are immediately pressed. Following fermentation, the wine is aged 18 months in oak (25% new oak).
Rich emerald gold colour, with a fragrant and expressive nose of almond, ripe apples, citrus, fresh butter and baking spices. Opulent and structured on the palate, with unique fruit concentration and a beautifully long finish. Finesse, complexity and elegance. Pair with grilled fish, creamy pasta dishes or fresh goat cheese.
“Hints of petrol and the exotic add nuance to the citrus confit, passion fruit and white peach scented nose. There is once again excellent density to the dry extract rich flavours that coat the palate, all wrapped in a stony, clean and solidly powerful finale that is both dry and youthfully austere. This fine effort possesses admirably good development potential. 2031+”
