Pazo Señorans’ Albarino is a masterclass in the varietal’s potential. Intensely aromatic, round, and consistently well-balanced, Albarino can be a young, drink-now wine, or a creamy lees-matured wonder with considerably aging potential.
Winemaker Ana Quintela sources pergola-trained fruit from a patchwork of small vineyards around the Salnes Valley in the region of Rias Baixas. The wine ferments in cool stainless steel tanks, then ages on fine lees for five months.
The result is a textural wine with waves of bright citrus, stone fruit, and white flowers on the nose and palate. Easy to love, there’s an intensity to the acidity that gives the wine remarkable structure.
“This bodega has made one of the 5 best releases of Albariño in every vintage stretching back more than 20 years, which is a track record that very few producers can match in any of the world’s wine regions. It excels on the strength of unusually concentrated fruit with impressive depth of flavour, along with a fresh, nimble character that stems from very fresh, thoroughly integrated acidity. Zesty but satisfying at once, this is the Albariño to use for converting any friends who’ve yet to try this leading category of Spanish whites.” Michael Franz on Pazo Senorans Albariño, Wine Review Online, October 2019
“The very young and faintly reductive 2021 Albariño is only 12.5% alcohol (the 2020 is 13.5%). It’s austere, sharp and vibrant, and the back label specifies one to three years, which to me is not its drinking window but the time you should wait before pulling the cork… It’s quite shy and austere, like sea breeze and spring water. It should develop further complexity with age. This has to be one of the most elegant and ethereal vintages for this wine.” 92 points, Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate, February 2022
