Sarah Case, owner of Pertuisane Productions, loves to shop the flea markets of southern France. A few years ago, while they were trying to come up with a name for for their new, dry farmed, old vine Grenache, she discovered an exquisite, small antique model of an 1880’s horse drawn, pumper cart. Pompier was born. It was a perfect fit to represent this deep red, warm hearted, spicy Grenache. Since the time of Napoleon, firefighters were known as pompiers or sometimes as sapeurs-pompiers. The latter refers to the military-based Paris Fire Brigade, Pompier (firefighter) comes from the word for “pump,” referring to the manual pumps originally used for firefighting like the one depicted on the label.

Pompier is the latest cuvée sourced from the black, stony vineyards of Maury. It is 100% Grenache – partly aged in concrete with a smaller percentage spending time maturing in French oak barrels.

It’s full of crunchy red fruit while maintaining much of the seductive, luscious character so typical of the wines of this village. A complex yet immediately enjoyable wine – great for all occasions.
