Pio Cesare

The Nebbiolo grapes for this wine are sourced exclusively from the Cesare family’s own vineyards: the famous “Il Bricco” Estate and the great hill of San Stefanetto, both located in the village of Treiso. One third of the wine was aged in French oak botti and barriques (one third new) for 30 months. The remainder spent three years in large French oak casks.

A very classic Barbaresco, this is an elegant wine with ripe, spicy fruit and great depth and complexity. The gentle tannins show finesse, but make no mistake: this is a Barbaresco with structure and opulence. It shows very long ageing potential.

“This is a very typical Barbaresco, with a solid core of fruit. Lots of strawberries, cedar and chewy tannins. Full and structured. Excellent length, with the tannins kicking in at the end. This needs at least four or five years of bottle age. Try after 2027.”

“Raspberries, currants, red plums, strawberries, citron pieces, pink grapefruit, pomegranate and bay leaves. In the background, nuances of roasted hazelnuts and green tea leaves describe the secondary scene. Medium body, perfectly ripe tannins and a balsamic finish with captivating nuances. Gorgeous right from the start, it will continue to grow over time.”

“The words “Barbaresco Pio” appear on the bottom of the label in tribute to the late Pio Boffa. The Pio Cesare 2019 Barbaresco shows a beautiful ruby-tinged appearance that is well suited to the bright aromas of cassis, pomegranate, licorice and grilled herb that lift from the bouquet. This Barbaresco is slender and silky in texture, and it’s already drinking nicely right now.”
