Morellino di Scansano is the quintessential wine of Tuscany’s Maremma region. It’s the drink of choice at Rome’s upstart enoteche: an enticing, voluptuous wine, yet never heavy. It’s a true pleasure to drink, and a crime to overthink.
A bright, robust blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Ciliegiolo (a varietal with the Italian name for “cherry”, undergoing something of a renaissance in central Italy). The region’s climate is somewhat Mediterranean, resulting in wines with soft tannins, ripe red fruit flavour, and subtle herbal-earth notes. The spirit of Morellino is easy, carefree, exuberant, and fresh. Ready to pair with tagliatelle al ragu, game, mushrooms with thyme, or grilled pork sausage.
“Bellamarsilia does a great job of presenting the fun and cheerful side of Sangiovese. The Morellino di Scansano appellation is known for its informal and accessible expressions. This wine delivers on those promises and shows a deft winemaking approach all the while. If you are looking for a no-fuss red, you can’t go wrong here.” Monica Larner on Bellamarsilia, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“A solid Morellino with cherry, dark-chocolate and walnut aromas and flavours. Medium to full body. Flavourful finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.” 92 points, James Suckling, October 2021
