Produttori Del Barbaresco

Nestled in the rolling hills of Piedmont, Produttori del Barbaresco is one of Italy’s most respected cooperative wineries. Since its revival in 1958 by the village priest of Barbaresco, Produttori has brought together local growers under one vision: to preserve the integrity of Nebbiolo and the heritage of Barbaresco. What began as 19 families working towards the same goal has grown into 56 members, each tending their own vines with intimate knowledge passed down through generations. Their collective vineyards span some of the appellation’s most prized crus, each site adding nuance to the winery’s celebrated single-vineyard Riserva program.

The Rio Sordo cru lies further from the cooling influence of the Tanaro River, with southwestern exposure and a distinct soil profile that fosters wines with plush texture and generous fruit. The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is a bold and brooding expression of Nebbiolo, more reserved in youth than typical for this site—hinting at excellent aging potential. Layers of dark cherry, plum, and blackcurrant meet incense, tobacco, and leather, all wrapped in a velvety structure with muscular tannins. It’s a wine with richness and dimension, grounded in tradition and built for the cellar.

Pair with aged cheeses, braised short ribs, or porcini risotto—the wine’s depth and structure make it a perfect match for earthy, savoury dishes.

“The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo marries finesse and power. Open-knit aromatics make a strong first impression. Layered and resonant in the glass, with tons of supporting structure, the Rio Sordo is going to need a few years to come into its own. Crushed rose petal, cedar, spice and tobacco lend notable finesse. The 2021 needs time, but it’s got the goods. The explosive, aromatic finish is sublime.”

“Dark and floral, showing aromas of potpourri combined with dried cherries, tangy pomegranate and a bit of earthy minerality. Almost supple, with medium to full body and a savory palate of candied orange peel. Firm tannins are dusty yet ripe, with refreshing acidity. March 2026 release. Drink or hold.”
