Castello di Volpaia is a winery cleverly hidden in a historic hillside Tuscan town, a historic walled commune that dates back to the 1100’s. Tanks are tucked in crumbling churches, barrel halls lie below stone piazzas, and a subterranean “vinoduct” flows underneath it all. It is one if Italy’s magical places, not to mention one of Tuscany’s best producers of Chianti Classico. Volpaia’s wines consistently make Wine Spectator’s list of the “Top 100 Wines of the Year”. This is no small feat.

Volpaia’s vineyards have been farmed organically for decades. Each vineyard is harvested and vinified separately. The Chianti Classico Riserva is made from a blend of the fruit coming from the best estate vineyards, aged 24 months prior to release. This is an iconic wine that the Mascheroni Stianti family have been producing since 1967, when very few producers produced a Chianti Classico Riserva. This is a wine with outstanding complexity and elegance.

“An icon produced since 1967, the apex of the Mascheroni Stianti family’s varietal research, from some of the highest farm plots. Pomegranate on the nose, touches of laurel, then peony and closing on hints of eucalyptus. Juicy – taut taste, with salty tannins and a return of small fruits.”

“Here the textbook is written on producing Riserva from 100 per cent sangiovese out of vintage as humid as they will come. Done so by making the most of vineyards at elevation in a cool location, that being Radda and selecting top level phenolic berries worthy of this place on the Chianti Classic pyramid. A sangiovese that slides and glides both across the palate and through the stages of its presentation. Seamless and teachable. Learn Riserva 101 right here. Drink 2024-2029. Tasted February 2023.”

“A rich ruby color, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva is a selection from the best vineyards, aged for two years. The nose opens to ripe and polished aromas of toasted cedar, cherry lozenge, menthol, and spiced orange peel. Medium-bodied, it offers ripe tannins that fold into a more mineral texture, with mouthwatering stony earth and a rather long, clean finish. It’s a very nice wine to drink 2025-2040.”
