Château Fortia Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Cuvée du Baron” 2016

chateau fortia chateauneuf du pape cuvee du baron
France Southern Rhône
Grenache and Grenache Blends, Shiraz / Syrah
Type: Red Table Wine
Vintage: 2016

Château Fortia is not a winery that chases good press on a whim. These are consistent, classic wines that faithfully represent the region’s terroir year after year. The Cuvée du Baron, which combines 45% Syrah with 40% Grenache, and 15% Mourvedre, was created in the memory of the Domaine’s founder, Baron Le Roy de Boiseaumarie. The wine was first released in 2001.

The wine went through a long, cool fermentation in small lots by varietal, then aged 18 months in old oak foudres prior to bottling. Deep garnet-purple in colour, this is a wine with a dense, complex nose and notes of plum and cassis and garrigue on a medium-bodied palate.

“Similarly coloured to the traditional cuvée, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Baron has rocking aromas and flavours of garrigue, kirsch liqueur, dried flowers, and spice. Deep, medium to full-bodied, elegant and weightless on the palate, it’s the finest example of this cuvée since the 2003. The blend is 55% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 15% Mourvèdre. Despite the high Syrah component, it just screams Grenache. Now-2028.”

“This has riper, darker berries with sweet, dark-spiced oak dressing the nose. Earthy, forest aromas, too. The palate has a smooth array of succulent, fleshy, ripe-fruit flavor, delivered in glossy tannins. Drink or hold.”

“Brilliant ruby. Primary red and dark berry scents on the nose, along with suggestions of pungent flowers, cured meat and garrigue. Weighty, mineral-accented raspberry and bitter cherry flavours stretch out and become sweeter with aeration. Rich but vibrant as well; finishes very long and juicy, with repeating red fruit and game character and supple, harmonious tannins lending subtle grip.”

“This is well-built, offering a ripe and racy feel to the mix of cassis, cherry, red licorice and singed apple wood notes. Shows lots of energy throughout, with a bright mineral streak scoring the finish. Very fresh. Drink now through 2030.”
