Located in the heart of the Sonoma Coast, CrossBarn is an innovative winery led by renowned winemaker Paul Hobbs’s. Dedicated to crafting wines of stunning quality and exceptional value, his approach combines sustainable vineyard practices and traditional technique. These sophisticated yet approachable wines focus on the expression of California’s most celebrated AVA’s, including the cool Sonoma Coast for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Produced using hand-harvested fruit from select vineyards within the Sonoma Coast appellation, CrossBarn wines balance structure and weight with pure, concentrated fruit. Fruit was fermented in stainless steel by native yeast, largely de-stemmed berries with some whole bunches. Following ten months maturation sur lie in oak (11% new), the wine was bottled unfined, with minimal sulfur added.
The 2014 growing season was the third in a string of outstanding growing seasons. What a run! Dry winter and spring conditions limited canopy vigour, and a warm summer without disruptive heat spikes resulted in steady, even ripening through to harvest. The resulting wines possess great site specificity and depth.
This is a smart, alluring Pinot that highlights the unique terroir of the Sonoma Coast. This is one of California’s wild places, where vineyards lie on fog-washed hillsides open to salty ocean breezes. The 2014 vintage is elegant and energetic, with wild raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate, fresh herbs, forest floor, and hibiscus tea on the nose. On the palate, fresh red cherry and tart rhubarb balance black tea spice. Graceful, polished tannins lead to a long, savoury finish.
“The Crossbarn 2014 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is another knockout winner. A Sonoma Coast cuvée of just over 11,000 cases, the wine (made from Dijon clones 777 and 115 and the Calera selection) exhibits some smoky barbecue notes, baking spice, loads of blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, medium to full body, and plenty of spice, but the purity of fruit and lusciousness are head-turners, especially at this price point.”

“One of the real gems in this lineup, the 2014 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is fabulous. The Sonoma Coast Pinot brings together the exuberance that is typical of the Paul Hobbs wines with striking freshness and perfumed aromatics. Red cherry jam, spices and wild flowers are laced into the inviting, expressive finish. At around $35 a bottle, this is one of the very finest Sonoma Coast Pinots readers will find in its price range.”
