Paul Hobbs’s Napa Valley Cabernet delivers exceptional depth by sourcing fruit some of the Valley’s best vineyards: Nathan Coombs Estate, State Lane, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Beckstoffer Las Piedras, and Flat Rock. In every way, 2013 was a phenomenal growing season. A warm, dry spring led to early bud break, limited canopy vigour and berry size, and created ideal growing conditions through to harvest. The resulting wines show striking balance and expression.
Produced using hand-harvested fruit, picked at night when the berries are cool, Hobbs’s Napa Cabernet is a Napa Valley showcase. Following a five-day maceration, the wine was fermented by native yeast in open-top stainless steel tanks. It went through spontaneous malolactic fermentation after being racked to barrels. Following 20 months maturation in French and American oak (63% new), the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The final blend comprises 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot.
This is a stately Cab with great depth, deep crimson in colour with a luxurious perfumed nose: lavender, graphite, and black fruit. The dense, viscous palate is rich with boysenberry, red currant, and cassis. Seamless, velvety tannins frame a long, elegant, smoky finish.

There are 5,800+ cases of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which has some Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot in the blend. About 40% of this comes from their estate vineyard in Coombsville. This is just beautiful, an earthy, graphite-laden, crème de cassis-scented wine with plenty of depth, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, opulent finish. This wine hasn’t been priced yet, but this is a beauty, and really over-delivers for a generic Napa cuvée. Drink it over the next 10+ years.”
