Delicious, yes. But if a wine could be intelligent, Terra Costantino’s ‘deAetna’ would wear that description well too. An elegant, versatile wine from one of the boutique producers responsible for taking Sicily’s wines from inconsequential to sought-after over the past decade. A blend dominated by Carricante, one of the island’s indigenous grapes. Generally, Carricante brings a balance of grainy grounded minerality, assertive citrus acidity and white flower aromatics to play.
Fruit comes from the Terra Costantino estate’s carefully tended Certified Organic vineyard on the southeast slope of Mount Etna. Grapes are harvested by hand, and wine ages for several months in stainless steel prior to bottling.
“The 2014 Etna Bianco de Aetna is comprised of 80% Carricante with 15% Catarratto and 5% Minnella. This pretty Etna white shows fragrant grassy and floral tones with peach, white melon and lemon zest. It offers smooth sailing on the palate with crisp delineation and a very immediate, direct and snappy personality. It would make a great aperitivo choice. Terra Costantino is a new name on Etna, at least for me. I was extremely encouraged by my first taste of these organic wines. With Italy’s most uncompromising winemaker Luca D’Attoma as consultant I knew I could expect authenticity, purity and territorial typicity. Happily, these wines delivered on all those fronts.”
