“What has long been recognized, however, is that if Montalcino has one great vineyard, it is Montosoli. Montosoli deservedly enjoys its reputation from the Altesino bottling that bears its name. Always one of the top Brunellos, it has earned 95 points or higher in more than half of the vintages we have tasted since 1988. Showing floral berry fruit and balsamic aromas, the Montosoli profile is refined, with harmony and balance.”
Bruce Sanderson on Montosoli, Wine Spectator, Oct 2016
In the 1970’s, Altesino was the first winery to introduce the concept of the “Cru” to Montalcino with their legendary Montosoli vineyard. The classification effectively pushed the region forward. Montosoli is a hillside vineyard of five hectares situated northeast of Montalcino, valued for its elevation, limestone soil, and range of microclimates. The first wine vinified only from this outstanding vineyard’s fruit was produced in 1975.
Since then, Altesino’s “Montosoli” Brunello di Montalcino has maintained its place as one of the most sought-after wines in Montalcino. Produced only in the best years, the unique site consistently yields complex, elegant wines. Montosoli is traditionally aged for four years prior to release: at least two years in Slavonian oak barrels, three to four months in medium-toast Allier barriques, and four months in bottle. Its intensely ruby red hue turns to deep orange-red with time spent in bottle. The nose has an exceptional personality, full of black cherry, blackberry, raspberry, violet, licorice, and vanilla gently accented by red pepper. This is a dry, warm wine, velvety and full on the palate that will comfortably for decades.
“The 2014 ‘Montosoli’ Brunello is an absolutely brilliant showing from Altesino, despite the difficult conditions of the vintage. This Brunello instantly impresses as it displays remarkable class and sophistication. As it unwinds in the glass it releases gorgeous aromatics of dried berries, leather, shaved white truffles, walnut, herbs and even subtle hints of dark chocolate all coming together. On the palate this is refined and elegant, with beautiful fine, silky tannins and striking overall balance and precision from start to finish. This clearly one of the most compelling wines from this vintage, and while it is already extremely appealing, it should also have a fantastic future ahead.”

“Montosoli is perhaps the most celebrated single vineyard site in Montalcino. Because it is farmed by multiple producers, we get a chance to taste many interesting and divergent expressions of Montosoli Sangiovese. Altesino’s 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli (with 10,000 bottles made) is one of the most consistent year in and year out. The wine boats a beautifully refined and complex bouquet with an embroidery of wild berry notes that segue to spice, tar and grilled herb. I love the wine’s intensity. I can’t believe it was easy to achieve without significant sacrifices in the vineyard (including rigorous green harvesting). The mouthfeel is smooth, silky and long. This is one of the best Brunellos made in the difficult 2014 growing season. Hands down.”
