LCBO Vintages Release
Castello di Volpaia is a winery cleverly hidden in a historic hillside Tuscan town, a historic walled commune that dates back to the 1100’s. Tanks are tucked in crumbling churches, barrel halls lie below stone piazzas, and a subterranean “vinoduct” flows underneath it all. It is one if Italy’s magical places, not to mention one of Tuscany’s best producers of Chianti Classico. Volpaia’s wines consistently make Wine Spectator’s list of the “Top 100 Wines of the Year”. This is no small feat.
Volpaia’s vineyards have been farmed organically for decades. Each vineyard is harvested and vinified separately. The winery recently invested in new cellar equipment that has enabled them to achieve better extraction of colour, flavour, and soft tannins. The 2015 incorporates fruit from vineyards that have been replanted with improved rootstocks and carefully selected clones. This vintage reveals an attractive, youthful black cherry colour with aromas of spice and sour cherry. The palate opens with nicely extracted ripe fruit and mellow tannins, and finishes with harmonious balance.
“A savoury, captivating, and clear taste. On the nose red fruit and spices, on the palate an elegant and articulated structure, of extraordinary enjoyment.”

“Aromas of cherries, dried strawberries and red plums. Medium to full body, round and ripe tannins and a nice, fresh finish. Drink now.”

“The 2016 Chianti Classico is all class. Fresh, floral and beautifully lifted, the 2016 offers a terrific expression of the estate in its mid-weight personality. All the elements meld together in this effortless, classy wine from the family. The 2016 is quite accessible today, but it also has enough brightness to age nicely for a number of years. What a pretty wine it is.”

“Red berries and earth notes reveal themselves slowly, with perfumed violet nuances showing up on the palate. Firm but refined tannins hold it all together, and the finish lingers with appetising minerality.”

“Showing ripe fruit and rich intensity, the 2016 Chianti Classico (made with 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot) would pair nicely next to pasta with extra cheese grated on top. This wine is bright and fruit-forward with the fresh acidity to cut though the fat in cheese, butter or cream. The tight and focused nature of the wine’s sharp berry flavors would also make a perfect contrast to the natural sweetness in those ingredients. This is always a great food wine, but this vintage is even better poised to match your favourite Italian dishes.”
