Zephyr

In 1985, inspired by the pioneering efforts of Marlborough’s maverick winemakers, the Glover family converted their farm to vines. Being a third generation farming family meant that the Glovers understood their land’s potential: they knew it was a site that could produce fruit for world-class wines. Looking back, the family describe it as a great, ambitious wine experiment.
The vineyard was initially planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. That composition has remained largely unchanged for over 20 years.

One significant change came about in 1990, at the end of harvest: while leaning over a barrel of fermenting Chardonnay, a glass of Grand Cru Gewürztraminer was handed to Zephyr’s viticulturalist Owen Glover. The wonderfully aromatic wine made an impression, and the next spring, the Glovers planted their first Gewürztraminer vines. The winery is now considered an aromatic specialist, with a focus on Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling. The wines show classic cool climate precision matched with depth and texture on the palate.
