Giovanni Rosso farms some of the Comune di Serralunga’s most historically important sites. The fruit for this wine comes from Costa Bella, south-facing at the northern end of the Comune; Broglio, sandy, east-facing in the heart of the heart of Serralunga; Sorano, clay-rich and east-facing; and Meriame, a recent acquisition with soil rich in limestone. Site-specific knowledge earned over the past century pays off in wines that harmoniously balance the unique qualities of Nebbiolo from each vineyard. The plots are managed according to organic growing practices, and maintained and harvested by hand.
Following harvest in mid-October, the wine was slowly fermented over 25 days in cement tanks by native yeast. Following fermentation, the wine aged in large French oak casks for 18 to 36 months, depending on the vineyard of origin, before it was bottled unfiltered.
Concentrated, bright garnet red in the glass, the nose is classic Serralunga: violet, rose, and black fruit with notes of cocoa, coffee, and liquorice. The palate is savoury and juicy with wild berry flavours, earthy overtones, a silky mouthfeel, and fine tannins that ease through a long finish.
“A ruby hue, the 2019 Barolo it is highly aromatic, with floral perfume, wild raspberry liqueur, roses, and incense. Medium-bodied, with lovely concentration and structure (but approachable), it is long through the palate, with red cherry, berries, and its floral perfume lasting through the finish. Drink 2024-2040.”
