Each wine in Kosta Browne’s “Appellation Series” is an attempt to capture the unique qualities that make the region unique. A series of regional celebrations, if you will.
While there are many differences between vineyards in the Russian River Valley appellation, many share a common influence: the cooling effect that follows the Russian River inland from the Pacific coast. The fog that follows the river inland helps keep nights cool and offers vines a respite from daytime temperatures. In turn, these temperature swings slow ripening and promote more evolved flavours in grapes. This is why the appellation is considered by many the heartland of Californian Pinot.
Traditional and non-traditional techniques are used to make a consistently precise and textural wine: Fermented in stainless steel, concrete, and wood vats, then matured in new French oak and concrete. Kosta Browne works with a number of great vineyards across the Russian River Valley appellation, but year over year, you can expect a Pinot with a full, textural mouthfeel with notes of raspberries, blackberries, and black cherries.
“The 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley was matured for 15 months in 34% new oak. It has a medium ruby colour and generous aromatic layers of lavender, licorice, eucalyptus and forest floor with a core of dark fruit. The medium-bodied palate is powerful, its concentrated fruit complemented by well-integrated oak spice. It has abundant, grainy tannins, bursts of mouthwatering acidity and a very long, layered finish.”
