Located directly in front of the winery, at 450 meters, the southwest-facing Vigna del Sorbo vineyard is planted atop Galestro soils in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, only a few hundred meters from the town of Panzano. First produced in 1985, Vigna del Sorbo started off as a Riserva, where it was then one of the first wines promoted to a Gran Selezione in 2009 when the new designation in Chianti Classico was introduced.

A single-vineyard Gran Selezione with its own precise identity as a dense, expressive and concentrated Sangiovese that often go beyond the highest expectations of this grape in terms of concentration, complexity and age-ability.

“Showing enormous precision and direction, the 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo (with 25,000 bottles released) is a generous expression of Sangiovese that boasts singular intensity. This organic wine offers black fruit, grilled rosemary, pressed rose and crushed limestone. All of these aromas enjoy special, forward-moving intensity that dovetails into the ample fruit generosity that this sun-filled vintage will be remembered for.”

“This red is tightly wound, linear in profile and full of black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, fresh loam and mineral flavors, supported by lively acidity and dense, suave tannins that integrate nicely with the tension and silky texture. Shows terrific length. Best from 2026 through 2045. 1,800 cases made, 700 cases imported.”

“Three parcels, two planted between 1965 and 1971 plus 1973, coming together because the uniqueness of these three plots are the schist soils that manifest above ground as Galestro. All about spiciness and mid-palate volume. The sorbo is a local fruit, specific to Tuscany, very dry and tannic, much like grapes. And hello to the Chianti Classico UGA within Greve commune because this is the first label to say Panzano, 40 years in the making and finally the mention is here. Structure is serious from a reduced crop yield due to frost in April and this is what Giovanni Manetti had to say at the time. “We had a couple of days very cold, April 6th and 7th but the damages are limited to the young vines. The majority of the buds of the other vines were still closed and were not hurt by the frost. In the rest of the CC territory there were some damages in the warmer areas and zero in the cooler ones like Radda and Lamole. The frost in 2017 was much more worse than this.” A linear Vigna del Sorbo this 2020, taut, extremely young and with a great potential. Drink 2026-2037.”
