Truchard’s estate vineyard is located in the Carneros region of the Napa Valley. It covers a 400 acre expanse of hills and valleys containing a variety of soils: clay, shale, sandstone, limestone, volcanic ash, and rock. The combination of terrain, geology, and marine-moderated temperatures provides ideal conditions for wine-growing. This is mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in several sites on steep south-west facing hillsides. The vines, 18 to 40 years old, produce wines that are deep in colour, dominated by lush flavours of plum, berry, and spice.
All of the fruit was harvested by vineyard block, then gently destemmed and crushed. Fruit macerated for 14 to 30 days, depending on lot. The wine aged 20 months in French oak barrels, 45% new.
The wine is elegant, with Truchard’s characteristically refined aromas of raspberry, plum, cassis, cedar, and vanilla. The mouth is layered with rich flavours of ripe cherries, red currants, and berry jam. Ripe tannins focus the palate and provide a long finish of spice and red fruit.
“Firm, focused and robust, with aromas of mulberries, dried herbs and baking spices. Medium-bodied with fine yet firm tannins. Well-composed and balanced, with a lively core of berries mingling with spices. Focused and flavorful finish with persistence. Try after 2025.”
93 points, James Suckling, April 2024
