In the 1970’s, Altesino was the first winery to introduce the concept of the “Cru” to Montalcino with their legendary Montosoli vineyard. The classification effectively pushed the region forward. Montosoli is a hillside vineyard of five hectares situated northeast of Montalcino, valued for its elevation, limestone soil, and range of microclimates. The first wine vinified only from this outstanding vineyard’s fruit was produced in 1975. Since then, Altesino’s “Montosoli” Brunello di Montalcino has maintained its place as one of the most sought-after wines in Montalcino. Produced only in the best years, the unique site consistently yields complex, elegant wines.
Montosoli is traditionally aged for four years prior to release: at least two years in Slavonian oak barrels, three to four months in medium-toast Allier barriques, and four months in bottle.
Its intensely ruby red hue turns to deep orange-red with time spent in bottle. The nose has an exceptional personality, full of black cherry, blackberry, raspberry, violet, liquorice, and vanilla gently accented by red pepper. This is a dry, warm wine, velvety and full on the palate that will comfortably age for decades.
“Dense aromas of red cherries, bark, mushrooms and plums follow through to a medium body with tangy acidity and juicy flavors. It’s very long and quite chunky, with velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Savory and tangy at the end. Drinkable now, but better in three or four years.”

“The original Montosoli bottling, first made in 1975, this is a gorgeous interpretation of the 2021 vintage and a testament to this revered site. Discreetly seductive, it slowly unleashes violet, vanilla, tarragon, sweet spice and damp forest floor. The palate is amply loaded with red and black currants without being heavy. Sangiovese’s brilliant acidity is on full display. Finessed tannins are well stacked, seamlessly placed and confidently firm. Floral and herb accents rebound on the finish. Taut but not austere, this promises to deliver slowly.”

“The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino Montosoli pours a deeper ruby hue and opens with compact aromatics of black raspberries, tea leaf, cocoa, rosemary, and crushed stone. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm core of tannins and a refreshing spine of acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. It’s still tightly wound and will benefit from another couple of years in bottle, then drink beautifully for 15 years or more. Drink 2028-2045.”
