In the heart of Burgundy, where every vineyard plot whispers an age-old story, Maison Auguste Thevenaut embodies the living legacy of an deeply rooted winemaking tradition. Established in 1947, their story is one of transmission, of expertise that has spanned decades, now reaching the third generation at the helm. They’re not just producers but guardians of the land and creators of emotion, committed to revealing the richness and diversity of this iconic region.
The Bourgogne Chardonnay is sourced mainly from the Côte Chalonnaise, a region known for its limestone-rich soils ideal for white wine. Vines are densely planted (10,000 per hectare) and pruned using the Guyot method. After hand-harvesting, grapes are gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine matures for 6–8 months, with the first 3 months spent on fine lees to enhance texture. In the glass, it shows a crystalline golden yellow hue with greenish highlights. Aromas of hazelnut, honey, butter, and sugared chestnuts lead to a bright, balanced palate with subtle spice and freshness.
Pairs beautifully with seafood, shellfish, and savoury tarts like onion or leek. It also complements a wide range of cheeses, including Brie, Saint-Nectaire, Comté, and Mont d’Or. An easygoing yet refined choice for casual meals or classic French dishes.
“Traditional as Bourgogne chardonnay would be is the understatement made here for this 2023 at the regional level by Maison Auguste Thevenaut. Sourced mainly from the Côte Chalonnaise and aged classically for up to eight months, inclusive of three on the texture (and yogurt) enriching less. Hard not to swoon when a Bourgogne at this AOC level acts as pure, clean and timeless as this. Wishing it were priced like 2015 but times have increased the price and that is just a fact of life. Nevertheless its quality warrants our attention. Drink 2025-2029. Tasted July 2025.”
