Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is a Fifth Growth of Pauillac with a distinctive history shaped by its founder, Pierre Ducasse, who assembled exceptional vineyard parcels through inheritance and acquisition in the 18th century. Unlike most Médoc estates, the vineyard is composed of three large plots spread across some of Pauillac’s most prized zones, neighbouring the likes of Mouton, Lafite, and Pontet-Canet. These sites sit on classic Garonne gravels and silica, with sandy gravels for Merlot, forming a terroir that epitomizes the power and precision of the appellation.

The wine is built around Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives on the deep gravel soils, complemented by Merlot grown on lighter, sandier plots. The resulting wine is structured and expressive, opening with aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, and graphite, layered with cedar, tobacco, and subtle earthy spice. On the palate, it is firm and Pauillac-classic, with dense tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, savoury finish marked by minerality and restraint.

This is a natural match for robust, protein-driven dishes. Pair it with grilled or roasted beef, lamb with rosemary, or game meats such as venison. It also works beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, slow-braised stews, and aged hard cheeses, making it a timeless Pauillac for the table.

“Deep dark ruby, opaque core, faintly lighter at the rim. Soft scents of cassis and liquorice, delicately smoky and savoury, as well as a hint of cedar wood. Juicy, freshly structured, well-integrated tannins, blackberry jam on the finish, subtle sweetness, good length.”

“A medium-bodied and elegant Pauillac with fine, mixed-currant aromas, polished tannins and a lively finish. Drink or hold.”
92 points, James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, January 2019
