Domaine Leflaive

This rare wine is a synthesis of what the Burgundy terroirs provide: poor soil, ideal exposure, a location in the middle of the hillside, a draining slope. The old vines make great wines with combined structure and substance.

The climat’s position at the bottom of the hill means that the soil is deeper here than in the other grand crus. Bâtard-Montrachet’s pebbly limestone soils have a higher proportion of clay, and so drainage is not quite so effective as higher on the hill. However, the soil still allows for contact between the vines’ root systems and the limestone below, which makes for healthy, strong vines, as well as contributing to the subtle mineral characteristics present in Bâtard-Montrachet wines.

“From 3 different parcels, two on the Chassagne side and the third in the Puligny sector that is near the border dividing the two communes. Once again a subtle but not invisible application of wood frames cool and ripe aromas of green apple, acacia blossom, petrol and airy zest-tinged nuances. Interestingly, the middleweight flavors aren’t quite as dense as those of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet yet the intensity is even higher, indeed it’s almost painful, while flashing impressive power on the gorgeously complex, sneaky long and equally well-balanced finale. This is also stunning but patience required.”

“Clear pale yellow. As always, the Bâtard comes over in much chunkier style after the cashmere texture of Bienvenues. This is hewn out of the rock rather than soft wool. The 2021 Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet delivers a block of power which will take much longer to come round, while the finish builds to an extraordinary degree. Drink from 2029-2038.”
95-97 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy, April 2023
