Clavoillon is a Premier Cru vineyard in the centre of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation. Prior to the late 19th century, it was a red grape area, but after the devastation of phylloxera, it was planted entirely with Chardonnay.
“Le Clavoillon” from Domaine Leflaive displays elegance and texture worthy of the cellar. Biodynamically-grown fruit from a single 12 acre parcel of the Le Clavoillon appellation was hand-harvested and sorted, then gently pressed and fermented in Vosges and Allier oak barrels. After 12 months in barrel, the wine was matured for six months in tank, where it was prepared for bottling. The cellars of Domaine Leflaive are biodynamic, with acute attention to detail and minimal fining or filtration.
“Leflaive is the largest holder of Clavoillon with a whopping 4.8 ha holding that averages 40+ years of age Here the reduction is sufficient to overshadow the fruit. There is even better volume to the sleek and delicious middleweight flavors that are less mineral-driven but more powerful and slightly more persistent and bone-dry finish that is also exceptionally well-balanced. This is excellent and I would go so far as to observe that it’s the best vintage for the Clavoillon in a long time. It is typically considered to be less interesting than the other 1ers (and not without reason) in the Leflaive portfolio and while it doesn’t surpass them in 2021, it is most impressive nonetheless.”

“Rather a severe nose, a form of reduction, possibly allied to sulphur. This soon cleans up. I asked for a second pour of this wine, and it was totally clean. This is more reserved with a depth of fruit that impresses, with also good variation, complexity, all white fruit, doesn’t have any specific citrus mote, A little barrel toast complements rather than interferes. Impressive length. Drink from 2026-2031.”
