Martin Ray was a pioneer in single varietal, region specific California winemaking from 1943 until 1972. Situated in Saratoga, the heart of the Santa Cruz mountains, his Burgundian approach to winemaking helped to develop what is now one of the most historical properties in California, Mount Eden.
In 2003, Martin Ray Winery made its home in the Russian River Valley. Carrying forward the idealogy of “wines in place”, they continue to draw from exceptional appellations from around California.
Martin Ray Napa-Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon is a perfect example of sourcing grapes from distinct appellations choosing premier locations from Alexander Valley, Sonoma County and Napa County, each with variances in climate, elevation, and soil type.
The wine went through a four day cold-soak, hand punch downs for two weeks in open top fermenters, then aged in 45% new French oak for 12 months.
A classic Cab Sauv with ripe notes of currant, blackberry, and peppercorn. Interlaced with wet stone and earth, over touches of elderflower and vanilla with fervent, yet silky integrated tannins.
“A very savory and delicious red with red-meat and currant aromas and flavors. Medium body and lightly chewy tannins. Currants and fresh herbs. Real cabernet character and dry at the end. Excellent value. Drink or hold.”
92 points, James Suckling, August 2022
