Avignonesi’s Vino Nobile not only brought the winery fame, it also revitalized the DOC. After more than 25 years, Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano continues to be considered one of the region’s best. The wine is made entirely of Prugnolo Gentile (the local name for the clone of Sangiovese) from eight of the estate’s vineyard sites, all based on clay-rich soil. Vines range in age from 11 to 41 years old.
Following fermentation by native yeast, the wine rested on skins for a period of extended maceration. It was aged for 18 months: 80% in barriques, 20% in large barrels.
A soft, nicely-rounded wine with elegant aromas of fresh red berries and floral and balsamic undertones. Medium-bodied with a palate of ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit, silky tannins, and a long mineral finish. While nicely balanced to enjoy now, the wine will age well for six to eight years.
“A savory and pretty nuanced Vino Nobile here showing orange zest, plums, grapefruit, mineral and fine spices. A twist of mineral salinity on the palate with firm, tense tannins and a pure, pithy finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink in the next five years.”

“Avignonesi’s pure, organically-grown sangiovese takes on an appealing ripe and sweet profile in the fine 2019 vintage, silky, refined and pure. Tannins are very silky in the Montepulciano style, acids succulent, and fruit sleek, black cherry-inflected. Wood is not a notable flavour factor, leaving the pure fruit and a lick of resinous herbs to carry the profile. This has wide appeal no doubt, drinking beautifully now, at or close to peak I’d say, though should hold another half dozen years without concern. Tasted February 2024.”

“The 2019 Nobile di Montepulciano is a total pleasure on the nose. Sweet spice compliments bright raspberry and cherry aromas. This envelopes the palate with silky textures balanced by juicy acidity as rose-tinged red berries cascade across the palate. It leaves a gentle coating of fine tannins while maintaining a lovely energy as hard red candy hints fade.”
