Sitting at the base of the Vaca mountains in the eastern Oakville bench is Bevan Cellars, producing some of the most sought after and collectable wines from the Napa Valley. The Oakville AVA was created by a landslide thousands of years ago and the red, rocky, clay soils mixed with well drained sandy-loam that has been deposited by the Napa River over the ages. Nutrient deficient, stressed vines, thrive in the deep, well-drained soils that allow for large root systems.
The Tench Cabernet is more immediately fruit-driven, with blackberries, boysenberries, mulberries and winter spices that dominate. A concentrated wine with plenty of fruit complexity, ripe tannins and a rich mouthfeel, this is a seductively opulent wine that will age for years to come.
“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Tench Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes barreling out of the glass with notes of crushed blackcurrants, black raspberries, and chocolate-covered cherries giving way to hints of charcoal, garrigue, and cast-iron pan. The full-bodied palate delivers a super taut backbone of ripe, firm tannins and lovely freshness to support the muscular black fruits, finishing long and minerally.” 97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent, October 2023
“From a parcel along Silverado Trail that Bevan describes as “super rocky,” the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard offers up a hugely complex, fruit-driven bouquet that blends purple raspberries, black cherries, red raspberries and cassis. It’s full-bodied and richly concentrated, with a long, velvety finish.”
98-100 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, May 2023
“From one of the top sites in the valley and all Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tench Vineyard isn’t far off the Calixtro cuvée, yet it’s more forward and opulent, with savory red and black fruits, notes of iron, dusty earth, leather, and baking spice, full-bodied richness and depth, and ripe yet building, substantial tannins. It offers some up-front charm today, but it’s going to reward 3-4 years of bottle age and should evolve for 25-30 years. This is another serious, age-worthy, incredible wine from Bevan that readers will absolutely love.”
98 points, Jeb Dunnuck, June 2023
