In the 1970’s, Altesino was the first winery to introduce the concept of the “Cru” to Montalcino with their legendary Montosoli vineyard. The classification effectively pushed the region forward. Montosoli is a hillside vineyard of five hectares situated northeast of Montalcino, valued for its elevation, limestone soil, and range of microclimates. The first wine vinified only from this outstanding vineyard’s fruit was produced in 1975. Since then, Altesino’s “Montosoli” Brunello di Montalcino has maintained its place as one of the most sought-after wines in Montalcino. Produced only in the best years, the unique site consistently yields complex, elegant wines.

Montosoli is traditionally aged for four years prior to release: at least two years in Slavonian oak barrels, three to four months in medium-toast Allier barriques, and four months in bottle.

Its intensely ruby red hue turns to deep orange-red with time spent in bottle. The nose has an exceptional personality, full of black cherry, blackberry, raspberry, violet, liquorice, and vanilla gently accented by red pepper. This is a dry, warm wine, velvety and full on the palate that will comfortably age for decades.

“Dense aromas of red cherries, bark, mushrooms and plums follow through to a medium body with tangy acidity and juicy flavors. It’s very long and quite chunky, with velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Savory and tangy at the end. Drinkable now, but better in three or four years.”

“The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino Montosoli pours a deeper ruby hue and opens with compact aromatics of black raspberries, tea leaf, cocoa, rosemary, and crushed stone. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm core of tannins and a refreshing spine of acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. It’s still tightly wound and will benefit from another couple of years in bottle, then drink beautifully for 15 years or more. Drink 2028-2045.”

“Proprietor Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini has important holdings in this special cru, and if you’re after Montosoli, this is one of the best expressions around. Fruit comes from a five-hectare plot with friable galestro soils at a sweet spot perched at 350 meters above sea level. The Altesino 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli flaunts an especially sharp profile with enhanced minerality and focus. There is wild cherry and dried currant, but ultimately more impactful are the elegant aromas of crushed stone. These give the wine brightness and vertical lift. The mouthfeel is medium- to full-bodied in texture with fine, powdery tannins that are well integrated. It is matured in Slavonian oak casks. You can cellar this wine longer, but you can also enjoy it in the medium term to take advantage of that pretty fruit freshness. Production is 12,000 bottles.”
