Quintessa is always deep and thoughtfully made. The biodynamically-farmed estate vineyard was designed to take advantage of every feature and microclimate created by the property’s five hills, lake, riverbed, and surrounding forest. From the beginning, it has been farmed organically.
Most of the estate’s vines are now 28 years old and mature enough to handle challenging weather conditions when they arise. Every block – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere – was harvested in sections so that fruit could be picked at the moment it showed its best character.
Intense aromas of cassis, black cherry, and raspberry intermingle with savoury notes of sage and thyme; Quintessa continues to unfold as notes of dark chocolate, graphite and fresh tobacco mingle with the fresh fruit. Precise and dense, the wine shows supple tannin that play with flavours of black cherry, dark chocolate, and crushed rocks. It has a perfect balance of fresh acidity followed by bright fruit and minerality at the finish that portends unparalleled aging potential.
Quintessa will cellar for decades and will reward your patience with many layers of delicious flavours that evolve with each sip and over the course of the evening.
“A muscular wine, but leading with tremendous freshness, restrained red-toned fruit and very subtle yet elegant cedar mingling with red-rock minerality. It offers more black fruit on the palate, redolent of muddled blackberries and juicy plums. ‘Iron fist in velvet glove’ comes to mind, given the tannin texture, which transitions to an undercurrent of iron-clad and dusty minerals. All this turns fresh and lively through the finish. Perhaps a bit hot on the alcohol, but this will soften soon enough – this is absolutely one of the more riveting wines out of the entire vintage.” 98 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter, September 2023
“Gorgeous aromas, fragrant and floral, sweet and heady sun-kissed currants and black cherry fruit. Full and intense but straight and linear, quite lean and not fleshy, with some cool, crystalline blue fruit aspects as well as liquorice and tobacco notes. It’s compact for sure, but so well worked, tannins are fine and firm, really supportive and give both a wide and deep frame. Spiced and chalky but this is slick, stylish and sophisticated. The coiled nature of the tannins keeps it from expanding too much right now, clearly youthful with bite and a smoky tang on the finish. A delicious, biodynamic wine worth getting your hands on. Estate director Rodrigo Soto, winemaker Rebekah Wineburg. Ageing 22 months, 60% new French oak. A blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Carménère and 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend.”

“A lovely red with a pretty core of currants, berries, spices and mushrooms. Medium to full body, layers of polished tannins and a juicy finish. A very balanced and fine wine. A little chewy. Drink or hold.”
