Terra Costantino’s Contrada Blandano comes from old vineyards in Viagrande on the south-eastern slope of Mount Etna. Planted at mid-elevation on sandy volcanic soils, these centennial vines benefit from significant day–night temperature swings, contributing to freshness, structure, and a clear expression of Etna’s volcanic character. Only the best fruit from these historic parcels is selected for the Riserva.
Made primarily from Nerello Mascalese with a small proportion of Nerello Cappuccio, the wine is harvested by hand and fermented on the skins in concrete tanks with gentle punch-downs to extract colour and tannin. After malolactic fermentation, it is aged in concrete and medium-sized oak barrels, followed by extended bottle aging. The wine shows aromas of red cherry, wild berries, dried herbs, and subtle smoky notes. The palate is firm and focused, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish.
This Etna Rosso Riserva pairs well with grilled meats, lamb, and slow-cooked dishes, as well as mushroom-based recipes and hearty vegetable preparations. It also works nicely with aged cheeses, making it a versatile and structured red at the table.
“Dusty and floral, the 2019 Etna Rosso Riserva Contrada Blandano is an understated beauty. Violet florals and suggestions of lavender accentuate crushed blackberries on the nose. This sweeps across the palate, lifted and finessed, with a pure core of fresh red berry fruits and sweet spices, all guided by a core of brilliant acidity. The 2019 takes on a crunchy sensation toward the close, finishing with silky tannins and just a hint of licorice. The later release of this vintage has given the wine an approachability that I find highly attractive.”
