The Titolato Colombaia is an estate-bottled single vineyard blend: roughly 90% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo, and other indigenous red varietals. Fruit from Falchini’s Colombaia vineyard, located in the rolling hills of Siena, near the city of San Gimignano went through a long, cool fermentation before it aged three to four months in oak casks.
Titolato Colombaia is typically released late, after a few months bottle rest, to achieve a characteristic smoothness and balance. This wine shows round, soft, charming character with delicate, mildly spicy nuance and good structure. Its weight and charming nature make it an ideal accompaniment to a wide range of Italian dishes: this Chianti would be happy on a table with heavy antipasti and pasta, roast poultry and meat, or nutty cheeses. Like the rest of Falchini’s wines, it is exceptionally good value.
“One of the top examples of sangiovese from the sub-Chianti appellation that is the large and expansive Colli Sensei. This is an appellation in three parts, one to the west and northwest of Siena, the other two south and southeast below Chianti Classico. Falchini’s are in the first and shared space with San Gimignano where they also make one of that area’s finest Vernaccia. This is about as warm, generous, fuller bodied and mature as it gets for sangiovese and the CCS, a wine that nurtures and also caresses the palate with silken fruit, sweet piquant acidity and even silkier tannins. An ideal 2020 in every respect and frankly there are no finer from this Chianti sub-zone. Drink 2024-2027.”
