Avignonesi’s Vino Nobile not only brought the winery fame, it also revitalized the DOC. After more than 25 years, Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano continues to be considered one of the region’s best. The wine is made entirely of Prugnolo Gentile (the local name for the clone of Sangiovese) from eight of the estate’s vineyard sites, all based on clay-rich soil. Vines range in age from 11 to 41 years old.
Following fermentation by native yeast, the wine rested on skins for a period of extended maceration. It was aged for 18 months: 80% in barriques, 20% in large barrels.
A soft, nicely-rounded wine with elegant aromas of fresh red berries and floral and balsamic undertones. Medium-bodied with a palate of ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit, silky tannins, and a long mineral finish. While nicely balanced enough to enjoy now, the wine will also age well for 6-8 years.
“A bright and vivid VN with cherry, violet and hibiscus aromas and hints of peach and lemon that follow through to a medium body. There are fine and integrated tannins and a vivid finish with lots of energy. From biodynamically grown grapes. Vegan. Needs a year or two to show its true excellence, but already a beautiful and linear wine. Drink or hold.”

“The 2020 Nobile opens in the glass like a basket of fresh berries complemented by hints of cinnamon sticks. Soft and enveloping, this possesses a solid core of ripe wild berries. It's more sapid and potent than your average 2020, with a core of brisk acidity maintaining lovely freshness. This finishes with a cascade of rosy inner florals and a tinge of licorice. It's just medium in length yet wonderfully fresh.”
