Castello di Volpaia is a winery cleverly hidden in a historic hillside Tuscan town, a historic walled commune that dates back to the 1100’s. Tanks are tucked in crumbling churches, barrel halls lie below stone piazzas, and a subterranean “vinoduct” flows underneath it all. It is one if Italy’s magical places, not to mention one of Tuscany’s best producers of Chianti Classico. Volpaia’s wines consistently make Wine Spectator’s list of the “Top 100 Wines of the Year”. This is no small feat.
Volpaia’s vineyards have been farmed organically for decades. Each vineyard is harvested and vinified separately. The winery recently invested in new cellar equipment that has enabled them to achieve better extraction of colour, flavour, and soft tannins. The wine incorporates fruit from vineyards that have been replanted with improved rootstocks and carefully selected clones.
This vintage reveals an attractive, youthful black cherry colour with aromas of spice and sour cherry. The palate opens with nicely extracted ripe fruit and mellow tannins, and finishes with harmonious balance.
“Black-cherry and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Some lead pencil and slate, too. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and firm acidity, which adds verve and tension to the wine. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

“Freshness incarnate exudes from Volpaia’s 2020 Annata and in fact the wine seems like it has barely achieved its alcohol and malolactic fermentation. In fact at a realistically labeled 13.5 per cent this from Radda is as beautiful and honest as it gets. Modern as well, stylish, of great attitude and delicious. The Raddese acidity is of course present and accounted for but that fruit. My. Oh My. Drink 2022-2025.”

“This 2020 Volpaia Chianti Classico has a sweet spice nose but the oak is not too dominant, and there is a just-about-ripe cherry note underneath. The first impression on the palate is of a softness and gentleness. It is medium-plus bodied with some elements of attractive sweet spice and ripe cherry or red fruits. The palate has fewer green notes than many other 2020 Chiantis, and the tannins are more integrated into the body of the wine, in the sense they are gentler. This is a nice wine with a seductive texture but also a serious side.”

“A bright, succulent style, this exudes cherry, strawberry, earth and tobacco aromas and flavors, with spicy character. Shows vibrant structure and balance, with a lingering finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2023 through 2030.”
