Guado de’ Gemoli is the flagship wine of Chiappini, a small, organically farmed estate in the heart of Bolgheri, Tuscany’s famed coastal region for powerful yet polished Bordeaux-inspired reds. The Guado de’ Gemoli is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Franc, capturing the bold, sun-drenched personality of Bolgheri while keeping a distinctly savoury Tuscan edge. Fermented in stainless-steel tanks and aged for 18 months in French oak barriques, 15% of which is new.

In the glass, expect a deep ruby colour with aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry, red plum, tobacco, grilled herbs, spice, and a touch of smoky oak. The palate is full-bodied and structured, with ripe berry fruit, savoury spice, firm tannins, and a long, earthy finish. This is a serious Bolgheri Superiore with both immediate richness and the framework to evolve beautifully in the cellar.

Pair with grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, lamb with rosemary, wild boar ragù, aged Pecorino, or mushroom-based dishes with plenty of savoury depth.

“The organic Chiappini 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Guado de’ Gemoli is a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot sourced from three hectares of 30-year-old vines planted on alluvial soils. The wine is rich and softly textured, owing to the hot and dry conditions of the vintage, with ripe aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant. Produced in just 10,000 bottles, this release shows softly integrated tannins and ample inner richness, giving it a more accessible and immediately appealing personality.”

“The 2022 Guado De Gemoli boasts an inky purple/red color and is slightly more expressive aromatically at this stage, with notes of blackberry, plum, preserved violet, cedar, and Mediterranean herbs, along with touches of macchia and forest earth. The same blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Merlot as the 2023, it saw a higher proportion of new oak, around 50%. Full-bodied, it is lush and perfumed but supported by bright acidity, with ripe, even tannins and good length. It’s a more open wine today, though perhaps with slightly less long-term tension than the 2023. Drink 2026-2038.”
